On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Kaulana “KaLa” Paishon, representing the leadership of Puʻuhonua o Waiʻanae, met with Dawn Chang, Chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources; Jun Yang from the Governorʻs office; and representatives from the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education to determine a collaborative path forward at the Waiʻanae Boat Harbor. During this meeting, both parties reached an agreement to avoid the daily removal of residents during construction hours, recognizing the trauma and instability such displacement would cause.
Instead, Kala proposed an alternative solution grounded in the village’s kuleana: residents would clear a designated section of the village themselves, honoring their longstanding commitment to care for the land and return it in better condition than it was found. In exchange, the State agreed to provide the village with a six-month extension, contingent on the completion of the first cleared section by Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025.
Since reaching the agreement on November 18, residents and community volunteers have been actively cleaning and preparing the area to meet the required deadline. Upon completion, the village will receive the full six-month extension, with the ongoing expectation of clearing additional sections over time.
This agreement reflects collaborative problem-solving, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to protect the well-being of the community while construction continues at the Farm Village.
Mahalo to our community, supporters, volunteers and fans for your aloha as we carry forward the legacy of Mama, Twinkle Borges.
