June 2026 Update and Response to Media

While we were doing our weekly cleanup this past Saturday (6/20/26), to our surprise, Sen. Samantha DeCorte held a press conference about us in the parking lot of the Waianae Boat Harbor. She complained about the fact that the State Dep of Land & Natural Resources has given us more time to finish construction and move our people safely from Harbor to homes at our mauka development. We were accused of theft, vandalism, and making kids feel unsafe on their walk to school.

Over the years, we've had to deal with these kinds of accusations. They come without evidence, and often precede an effort to sweep houseless people out of one area and into another.

We are working hard to build homes for our people and move ourselves from the Harbor. We are also cleaning up after ourselves as we go. So far, we've moved 70 people, with dozens more moving the coming weeks, because their units are now ready. We are doing this using private dollars, that we raised from generous people and organizations who believe in our village.

We have always invited anyone with complaints or concerns about us to come sit and talk with us. We are grateful for the relationship and direct communication we have built with DLNR and the Governor. We are still open to building the same kind of relationship with the Senator from our area, and anyone else with an interest in our work.

Meanwhile, we're going to just keep working, moving our people home, and cleaning up at the Harbor. All are welcome to join us.

Aloha!
