Aloha,
As we head into 2026, we want to share a meaningful update on where things stand and extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported Puʻuhonua o Waiʻanae during this critical time.
In November, we reached an agreement with the State that required us to clear a large section of the village by Thanksgiving in order to receive an extension at the Waiʻanae Boat Harbor location. Thanks to the hard work, heart, and dedication of our residents, volunteers, and supporters, we met that challenge. The eight days of clearing were intense and demanding, and every person who showed up made a real difference. Many took time away from work, family, and personal commitments simply because they believe in this village and what it stands for. From all of us on the leadership team, mahalo nui loa. Your efforts protected our community and gave us the time we need to continue building a safe and stable home.
With one of a few sections complete, we are now moving into the next phase of our agreement and continuing the transition of people from Makai up to Mauka. Progress across the site continues: Phase 1 is fully completed and occupied. Phase 2 construction of the hale and hale ʻāina is complete, with grading nearly finished and work beginning on sidewalks, fencing, and yards. People have already begun moving into Phase 2, with more expected soon. In Phase 3, several Continest units are already up and occupied, and Phase 4 Plugin House units are erected.
Construction progress has been impacted by weather. Several days of heavy rain have slowed building work. Even one day of heavy rain can delay construction by several days to a week, as crews must wait for the ground to dry to avoid damage and safety issues.
As we move forward, we continue to be guided by the legacy of "Mama", Twinkle Borge. Even a year after her passing, her vision shapes everything we do.
